Erica Explains: RTF vs. Painted Finishes

Erica Explains: RTF vs. Painted Finishes

When you're helping customers narrow down cabinet finishes, the decision often comes down to just a few key priorities. Today, I want to walk through the difference between two popular options: RTF (Rigid Tough Finish) and premium painted finishes.
Both are beautiful choices — but they serve slightly different needs depending on what your customer values most.

Start with What Matters Most to Your Customer

When I’m talking through finish options with designers, I usually start with one simple question:
What matters most — durability or sheen?
Because that’s really where the biggest difference shows up.

RTF: Built for Durability

If your customer is prioritizing long-term durability, RTF is a great option.
RTF — or Rigid Tough Finish — is designed with performance in mind. It offers strong scratch resistance and holds up well to everyday wear and tear. For busy households, high-traffic kitchens, or customers who simply want something that’s going to last, RTF is often the right fit.
Another thing you'll notice with RTF is the finish itself. It typically has a more matte appearance, which can help minimize the look of fingerprints, scuffs, and everyday use over time.

Premium Painted Finishes: A Bit More Sheen

On the other hand, if your customer is drawn to a finish with a little more sheen, a premium painted finish is a great choice.
Painted finishes tend to have a slightly glossier look, which can create a more polished, elevated feel. This is often appealing to customers who are focused on aesthetics and want that subtle reflective quality in their cabinetry.
Both finishes can look beautiful — it really just depends on the style and performance priorities for the space.

A Side-by-Side Example

When you look at these finishes side by side — like our Onyx finish in both RTF and premium paint — you can start to see the difference more clearly.
The RTF option appears more matte, while the painted finish offers a bit more sheen. It’s a subtle distinction, but one that can make a big impact depending on your customer’s preferences.

Helping Your Customer Decide

When you're guiding customers through this decision, keep it simple:
Choose RTF when durability and scratch resistance are the top priorities
Choose premium paint when your customer prefers a finish with more sheen
Both options offer great performance and beautiful results — it just comes down to what matters most for the home and how the kitchen will be used day to day.
Because at the end of the day, great design isn't just about how it looks — it's about choosing the right finish for how your customer lives.
